TEHRAN UNVEILS NEW CRUISE MISSILE EFFORT
International concern over Iran’s missile program is set to expand with the Islamic Republic’s recent announcement that it has commenced development of an extended-range indigenous cruise missile. Aviation Week and Space Technology (February 2) reports that the new rocket, dubbed the “Raad,” is modeled on China’s “Silkworm” missile. Its design includes a turbojet engine that Iranian officials say will give the “Raad” triple the range of Iran’s existing 120-kilometer range “Noor,” a variant of the Chinese YJ-2/C-802. Acquisition of the ship- or shore-launched cruise missile is expected to significantly boost Iran’s striking capability against naval targets.
More stuff to worry about in the Stait of Hormuz.
