"We must be ready to dare all for our country. For history does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. We must acquire proficiency in defense and display stamina in purpose." - President Eisenhower, First Inaugural Address
Interesting to see the focus on the battleship. Even after the attack on Pearl Harbor later that year many people on both sides still believed that the battleship would be the war winner.
They still love them. As a hospice volunteer, I recently took care of a gent who had been on the USS Missouri for years. I asked him if he would want to go back and relive a day there on which he stood the worst watch he ever had, and he just gave me the biggest grin I had seen so far on him and wrote out on his notepad "hell yes!".
