After considerable criticism for his agency's response to Hurricane Katrina, Mike Brown has resigned as head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
New FEMA director was a former assistant bio R. David Paulison:
David Paulison, a 30-year veteran of fire rescue work and a three-year employee of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will serve as acting director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, whose embattled director, Michael Brown, resigned earlier in the day.
"Chief Paulison has over 30 years of experience in emergency management, working his way up the ranks from firefighter to chief of the Miami-Dade County fire and rescue department," Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in a written statement. "I appreciate his willingness to take on the vital task of leading FEMA during this challenging time."
Chertoff said he expects to make other appointments to FEMA in coming days, "including a permanent deputy director to augment the resources available to assist with FEMA's vital mission."
