Post-Katrina Lawsuits? Only the lawyers will get rich...

Houston Chronicle says Storm lawsuits a long shot. Let's hope so, but I'll bet some law firms are already gearing up and eyeing 50% contingency fees. My guess is that they will go after big oil and chemical plants for not being waterproof up to 30 feet of water. Why bother with the government when you can argue that exposure to chemical X will affect you for the rest of your life and the BIG CORPORATION that saved a fee dollars not building its dikes high enough ought to have anticipated that if those dikes were breached, then thousands of people downstream would be inhaling and exposed to various nasty chemical things...

The first fight will be over getting a class certified. Not much difficulty in finding a friendly "expert" who will testify on behalf of the victims...there's a whole industry grown up around such toxic chemical cases.
