"Death Ship" that sank off South Africa failed a US Coast Guard inspection

Earlier I posted on the sinking of the Greek registered ship Alexandros T. It appears that 26 crewmembers have died in the sinking. As noted here:
With hope of finding the 26 missing crew of the ill-fated Greek bulk carrier the Alexandros T all but abandoned at the weekend, it has emerged that the ship failed a 2003 safety inspection.

The inspection by the US Coast Guard found a number of glaring structural and mechanical faults in the 17-year-old, 299-metre-long vessel.

UPDATE: (5/9/06) 18 of the missing are from the Philippines, as are the 6 survivors.
