"We must be ready to dare all for our country. For history does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. We must acquire proficiency in defense and display stamina in purpose." - President Eisenhower, First Inaugural Address

Private Military Contractors: Thomas P.M. Barnett has some thoughts
Interesting thoughts on Blackwater USA and perhaps a greater role for Private Military and other contractors in Thomas P.M. Barnett's The Pinkertons of the 21st Century.
Of course, I might have used the "privateer" comparison myself. More info on privateers in US history here. And, of course, the Somali "government" was contracting with "Top Cat Marine" to so some offshore work, as set out here.
There is nothing new under the sun.
Ships is the privateer America.
