"Trinidad fishermen are sitting ducks at sea because we do not carry firearms," one fisherman told the meeting at the weekend arranged by the Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Marine Resources to collect data to formulate a fisheries policy for Trinidad.
He said that the fishing boats of the Guyanese, Venezuelan and other Caribbean fishermen were armed with weapons and remained safe from piracy unlike those of Trinidadian fishermen. The Coast Guard, the fishermen said, was inefficient.
"We must be ready to dare all for our country. For history does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. We must acquire proficiency in defense and display stamina in purpose." - President Eisenhower, First Inaugural Address
