Port Security: Eight banana boat stowaways caught

Reported here:
Eight Ecuadoran men attempting to enter the country illegally were found Monday hiding on a banana boat docked at the Port of Hueneme, one of the largest such incidents in the port's history.

Dan Hultgen, president of the Local 46 International Longshoremen's & Warehousemen's Union, said he has seen more stowaways or signs of them in recent years. Longshoremen will find buckets of urine or feces or other traces of humans living aboard ships, he said.

"It seems to be something that is being swept under the carpet. Who is to say these stowaways couldn't be terrorists? They could be bringing a bomb in. That's the scary part," he said.

The port was closed last month after longshoremen found a potential terrorist threat aimed at President Bush scribbled on the walls of a ship. After four hours, the port was reopened when it was determined that there was no viable threat.
