60mm Mortar Rounds found on Philippine ferry

Reported here:
The military has seized 10 mortar rounds on board a ferry boat bound for Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, Wednesday night, the military’s Task Force Zamboanga said yesterday.

Col. Nonato Alfredo Peralta Jr., the task force chief, said they received a tip from civilians that 10 rounds of 60mm mortar would be brought on board the m/v Kristel Jane, which was docked at the city port, and he dispatched a team to inspect the vessel’s cargo around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Peralta surmised that lawless elements may have been trying to ship the cargo said a 60mm mortar is more powerful than a grenade and could cause greater damage.

The mortar rounds were placed in sacks and Peralta surmised that lawless elements may have tried to ship the ammunition, but the authorities could not determine who brought them on board the vessel, which regularly plies the Zamboanga City-Bonggao route.
