BBC "reports" news: "Pirates 'kill' hostage in Somalia"

I posted about the killing of a hostage in Somalia yesterday here. In one of the oddest uses of quotation marks I have ever seen, the BBC reports the same story as Pirates 'kill' hostage in Somalia.

What kind of headline writing is this?

Is there doubt about the killing? Then the headline should read "Pirates allegedly kill hostage in Somalia" or even "Pirates reportedly kill hostage in Somalia." Which is what they did in the lead paragraph.

If they are being safe perhaps they should write: 'Pirates' 'kill' 'hostage' 'in' 'Somalia'.........

Back to reading their "news."
