Reported here:
A gang of six, all Guyanese nationals, were arrested Sunday for alleged piracy and hijacking of fishing boats in Surinamese waters, police authorities here confirmed. Police spokesman, Inspector John Jones, told local media that inquiries so far revealed that the six strong gang, ranging from 25-35 years, has been targeting fishing boats but managed to elude police by hiding in Guyana after their attacks.Self-defense? Hmmm. You know, that just might work...

Recently, the minister of Justice and Police announced that the authorities are considering issuing firearms to fishermen, to enable them to protect themselves against the violent attacks of pirates, mostly Guyanese criminals. Fishermen in neighbouring Guyana are also being attacked frequently by pirates, resulting in tremendous losses for the local fishing industry.
