I recently had the "opportunity" to use a product that I can recommend for people who split their own firewood and want a safer, easy-on-the-back tool. I endorse the Woodwiz(r) Splitter-The safer smarter hand held firewood splitter. Much, much better that a maul or wedge and sledge.
If a fat, old guy like me can split wood easily using this tool, it is a really good tool.
Runs about $100 plus shipping.
Would make a great Christmas gift.
