Somali Pirates: Container Ship Taken in Indian Ocean

During the early morning of October 15 2009 a Singapore-flagged Container Ship KOTA WAJAR was hijacked in the Indean Ocean by Pirates some 300 nautical miles north of the Seychelles.

On first indication of an attack an EU NAVFOR maritime patrol aircraft, was tasked to investigate the situation.

SINGAPORE-flag containership Kota Wajar has been hijacked in the Gulf of Aden this morning, in a location about 550 miles off Somalia and 150 north of the Seychelles, EU Navfor has confirmed.

This is the first known hijacking of a merchant vessesl since the capture of Turkish bulk carrier Horizon 1 on July 8.

According to the Lloyd’s MIU database, the 1,550 teu Kota Wajar, built 1997, is associated with Singapore-based Pacific International Lines.
