Get Ready! Disaster Preparedness Time!

Hurricanes, floods, tornadoes are coming. Earthquakes are always a threat. Terrorism can close a city. And so can a broken water main.

Get ready. Now!

Okay, assuming that you haven't been running around from Lowe's to Home Depot to REI and assembling your own 5 day emergency kit - spend $160 and buy one of these: Deluxe Home / Office Emergency Kit - 5 Person:
This kit by iPrepare was awarded "Best Overall Value" by the Wall Street Journal

This survival kit is designed to meet the needs of employees at their workplace in the event of earthquakes, power outages, or any other major disaster. The food and water have a 5-year shelf life. What a great investment in security!

Yes, you can do it cheaper. But you haven't, have you?

I'd add more matches, some dried milk and kid food. A camp stove? Propane? A candle lantern...
Bug repellent (an mosquito netting). Lots more wipes. A pry bar. A "come along."
(see here)

Self-defense? I'm interested in this. Which lessens the chance you'll kill some one by accident.

UPDATE: Nice water filter. And be sure to add a small bottle of chlorine bleach to your kit.

Just so you'll know: I am not compensated by iPrepare, nor do I know anyone who works for that company, nor am I affiliated with it in any way.

  2. You made an excellent point by saying this can be done cheaper, but then challenging readers whether they've done so.

.410 is a really worthless self defense round, and .45 size rounds are done better elsewhere. Take a pass. If you desperately want a small shotgun then pony up the NFA tax to get a 12 gauge Serbu Shorty. At least it fires a real shotgun round (from a near worthless barrel length though). Unscientific but here: http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot41.htm

As for me, I'll stick with my Beretta and my STG-556 (Steyr AUG clone). The AUG fits under good sized jacket and with the quick change barrel removed it'll fit inside a backpack or tennis racket case.

  4. The "Judge" was sort of an afterthought - but for a self-protection weapon it is small enough to add to an emergency kit and can be used to take out snakes and other vermin without posing a risk to your honest neighbors.

The key is the rest of the kit, without which the pistol is superfluous.

  5. When it comes to our property, what do we expect in case of loss (hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, fire, etc.)? The disaster itself is news. What happens after the dust settles is the story: the aftermath shock. Here is something the public should know. With a little curiosity, you the insurance policyholder can now mitigate that shock.

You need to be informed of access to your basic rights and vital information--even footing--equality. The internet reaches far more people than anyone would have ever imagined, though difficult to gather those willing to pause, to inspect...to grasp. And yet, much is available gratis! It just takes looking: www.disasterprepared.info
