Golden Oldies of Logistics at Sea

A look at the U.S. Navy at war in 1968, focusing on the logistics train:

Except that certain "politically incorrect" items would not now be allowed on ships and that there are now women at sea, the underlying principles haven't changed all that much.

  4. Video brings back some memories. My first ship was USS Graffias AF-29 (1968-69)which loaded stores at Alameda in the video and went into and out of Subic to Yankee Station. USS Vega was in our squadron. We had the old rigs and even steam winches!
I would note that today all of the CLF ships are assigned to MSC and most of their ops are performed by CIVMARs

They scrapped Savannah and Suribachi, accomodations weren't up to civmar standards. There's a national Geographic film of the Savannah getting scrapped somewhere out there.

One of the funnier episodes I had was when my potential relief came aboard to find out what the job was like. He was laboring under the impression that we replenished a ship and then knocked off for the weekend, after explaining the unrep sequence for a CVBG and then hitting the station to replenish ourselves for the stuff we'd transferred, followed by staging for the next unrep, we never saw him again. I don't think anyone had ever told him how the fleet train actually worked.
