Friday Fun Film: ASROC - "Anti-Submarine Rocket" Stuff and Big Boom!

Back in the day:

Oh, and about that ASROC nuclear warhead:

In case you missed it - you didn't want to fire one of these things upwind from your position:
" . . . as the base surge spread to its full size, it began to drift downwind, a feature which needs to be taken into careful account in the tactical use of this weapon."
Well, yeah.

  1. The tactical memnomic was "Ass to the blast and step on the gas" as I recall. Cogent advice.

    2. Right! There was even a maneuvering board problem for calculating when and what course as I recall.

I recall a DRT template to use with them, closest I got was exercises, probably just as well.

When I was a very junior officer, my department head had been on Agerholm during the test. It was apparently quite an experience, he was surprised that it didn't sink the ship.
